About this image

This barred spiral galaxy in Aquila was discovered in August 1863 by Albert Marth using a 48" reflector.

The galaxy can be seen faintly at the centre of the image, showing a bright nucleus and an ovoid disk (the galaxy is tilted to the line of sight) oriented NE-SW. 

Apparent magnitude 12.6. Distance c.179-220million ly Diameter c.100,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, high cloud.
