Venus nightside on 23rd September

About this image

Venus' nightside recorded in the near infra-red with a partially-transmitting mask to attenuate the very bright crescent. Venus was just over 30% illuminated and had an angular diameter of 36 arc seconds. The image is a processed stack of 8000 video frames of 0.2 seconds' exposure, an integrated exposure of 26.6 minutes. A comparison map from WinJupos is shown in the same orientation. The dark region at the limb and another towards the north pole are consistent with the reference image. The image suffers from glare near the edge of the mask and noise due to the extreme contrast stretch needed to show the nightside.
