Title

Coma expansion of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks

About this image

12P/Pons-Brooks had another explosive outburst some time between October 4.93 and October 5.23. This plot shows the coma diameter measured using Comphot for 4 days following the outburst. The best-fit straight line shows an expansion rate of 18.83 arcsec/day. The comet's current distance from the Earth is 3.05 au so one arcsecond corresponds to 2,200 km at the comet. The diameter expansion rate corresponds to around 240 m/s at the comet. The last outburst in July showed an expansion rate of 200 m/s so this outburst appears to have been more energetic which is what you might expect given that the comet is now closer to the Sun.
