About this image

This is a great object

M33 is a member of our local group, about 14,000lyrs distant and this image nicely shows the spiral structure as well as active star forming regions (where hydrogen is being heated and emitting the charateristic red)

This galaxy is 73 × 45 arcminutes across so pretty big and is a naked eye object in dark skies. It apparently bucks the trend in not having a central super massive black hole.

The seperatley catalogued NGC 604 is visible in the image here to the centre left - this is a star forming region about 40 larger than the Orion Nebular we see in our own galaxy.
