NGC 1409 & NGC 1410 Interacting Galaxies in Taurus

About this image

NGC 1409 (top) is a lenticular galaxy, apparent mag. 13.8. It was discovered by William Herschel in January 1785.

NGC 1410 (below) is a spiral galaxy, apparent mag. 14.0. It was only identified as a separate galaxy in 1855, when Lord Rosse's assistant, R.J. Mitchell, observed it with the Leviathan.

The galaxies are interacting strongly, and are linked by a thin stream of dark material (not visible here).

This COAST (COmpletely Autonomous Survey Telescope) image shows the nuclei in close proximity (separation c.23,000ly), with irregular patches of their enveloping disks.
