About this image

This 11th mag. planetary nebula was discovered by William Herschel in March 1786. It is located at the edge of the open cluster M46, most of which lies to the SW in this image. However, it is not part of the cluster lying significantly closer to us, c.3,000ly compared to the cluster's c.5,500ly.

Distance c.3,000ly. Size c.1.0ly.
