About this image

This comet is now just past its closest approach to Earth which occurred on November 10. It is only 0.19 au away and rushing across the sky through Hercules into Aquila at around half a degree an hour. It has a large diffuse coma and the total magnitude is now around 7 and it is well placed for us in the early evening sky. The comet has a thin ion tail which was in a PA of 70 deg last night although this is rotating rapidly due to the changing geometry. It also has a bright forward "jet" in the opposite direction to the tail. The comet is now moving rapidly southwards so it will become difficult to observe from the UK. It is also fading as it moved away from both the Sun and the Earth.
