Title
Changes in Io's sodium cloud, 10-11 November
About this image
Images of Io's sodium cloud captured at intervals on the evening of 10-11 November 2023. Io was close to western elongation from Jupiter, Europa (on the left) was moving in towards a transit and Ganymede (near Jupiter on the right) had just transited and was moving away from Jupiter. The shape of the sodium stream from Io changed noticeably during the three hours covered by these observations. The outer part was initially a narrow streak north of Io's orbital plane, but later broadened to the south and faded slightly, becoming more fan-like in shape. The inward-pointing streak also shows changes of shape.
Using a refractor for these observations eliminates the diffraction spikes from the secondary support of the Newtonian that were intrusive in previous images.
