About this image

This barred spiral galaxy in Perseus was discovered by William Herschel in December 1786.

The image gives the curious impression of a double nucleus with brighter and fainter components. This is present in some images by other observers, and I thought it might indicate an intervening star. But the effect is not seen in all images. An irregular patch of material surrounds the nucleus, with some faint indications of arms. Observing with a 12.5" Newtonian, Patrick Maloney described this object as "very faint and difficult" to observe.

Apparent mag. 11.6. Distance c.115million ly. Size c.120,000ly x 84,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, low cloud.
