About this image

This lenticular galaxy in Cygnus was discovered by William Herschel in July 1784.

Not an easy object to observe by most accounts, the image shows a bright nucleus and a relatively small, fainter disk (the galaxy is tilted to the line of sight). A much larger and fainter ring surrounding these visible elements is not visible here.

Apparent mag. 12.1. Distance c.37-41million ly. Diameter c.42,000ly.

Bortle 7/8. Low cloud.
