NGC4217 is an edge-on spiral galaxy. It was discovered by William Herschel in April 1788.

This COAST image shows a thick dust lane crossing the brighter central bulge.

Apparent mag. 11.2. Diameter c.100,000ly. Distance c.60million ly.

NGC4226 is a barred spiral galaxy. It was discovered by William's son, John Herschel, in March 1828.

The image shows a bright nucleus surrounded by a fainter inner disk with a very faint outer disk.

Apparent mag. 14.0. Diameter c.128,000ly. Distance c.340million ly.
