About this image

IC4997 (the upper of the two bright objects centred in the image) is an insignificant-looking planetary nebula, visually indistinguishable from a star. Yet it turns out to be a surprisingly interesting object with odd characteristics, particularly its variability. It was discovered both by the remarkable Williamina Fleming and by Gustav Gruss in 1896.

Apparent mag. 11.15. Distance c.14,090ly. Apparent size 2.7" x 1.4".

Bortle 7/8.
