NGC 2820 Edge-on Spiral Galaxy in Ursa Major

About this image

This COAST image shows four galaxies in Ursa Major:

NGC 2820 edge-on spiral galaxy, mag. 12.8.

NGC 2814 edge-on spiral galaxy, mag. 13.7.

NGC 2805 face-on spiral galaxy, mag 11.0. The arms show a considerable amount of distortion.

These galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in April 1791.

The much fainter IC 2458 irregular galaxy (mag 15.0) was discovered over a century later, by Guillaume Bigourdan in March 1899.
