About this image

This rather plain-looking lenticular galaxy is in fact a rare polar ring galaxy. It was discovered by Wilhelm Tempel in August 1882.

Distance c.42 million ly. Size c. 50,000ly. Apparent mag. 11.3.

Bortle 7/8, Moon 1st qtr, 48%, 7 days. Cold - the 'scope ended the evening covered in ice!
