About this image

This COAST image shows the flocculent ('clumpy' or 'woolly') intermediate spiral galaxy NGC 3251. Although a spiral, the arms are not well defined and have a mottled appearance. The galaxy was discovered in February 1784 by William Herschel.

Apparent mag. 9.0. Distance perhaps 40million ly. Age c.13.26billion yr.
