About this image

This COAST image shows NGC 3607, the brightest object, with 3605 close by below and 3608 above. These galaxies are part of the Leo II group. At far right is NGC 3599 which is not a member of the group. All four galaxies were discovered by William Herschel on the night of 1784 Mar 14. The faint (mag. 16.3) galaxy MCG+3-29-18 can also be seen.

3607 mag. 9.9 lenticular, distance c.40-45million ly, diameter c.60-65,000 ly.

3608 mag. 10.8 elliptical, distance c.55-60million ly, diameter c.55thousand ly.  

3605 mag. 12.3 elliptical distance c.70-80million ly, diameter c.20-25thousand ly.

3599 mag. 10.2 lenticular, distance c.69million ly, diameter c.21thousand ly.
