About this image

This mag. 11.7 edge-on spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in January 1788.

The COAST image shows a bright nucleus with a bright disk fading as it tapers. Some signs of structure in the disk can be seen faintly. The galaxy harbours a supermassive black hole.

Distance c.52million ly.
