Title

NGC3610 Elliptical Galaxy in Ursa Major

About this image

NGC3610 is an unusual elliptical galaxy in that it displays a bright disk, appearing more like a lenticular galaxy than an elliptical. It is thought to be a relatively young elliptical still showing traces of spiral structure derived from a galactic merger. It was discovered by William Herschel in April 1793.

This COAST image shows a bright ovoid core surrounded by a fainter disk.

Apparent mag. 11.3. Distance c.83million ly. Size c.76,800ly. Age c.4billion yrs.
