Title

Arp 307 Galaxy Pair in Leo (NGC 2872, 2874)

About this image

Arp 307 consists of the galaxy pair of NGC 2874 (left) and NGC 2872. Both galaxies were discovered by William Herschel in March 1784.

NGC 2874 is a 12.5 mag. barred spiral galaxy. NGC 2872 is a mag. 11.9 elliptical galaxy. They are in interaction and lie at a distance of about 110million ly.

The smaller, fainter and more distant NGC 2873 lies a little above the pair in this COAST image. It is a mag. 15.4 lenticular galaxy. It was discovered, just over seventy years after the brighter pair, by R. J. Mitchell (an assistant of Lord Rosse) in February 1857.
