About this image

NGC5746 is a rather nice mag. 11.0 barred spiral galaxy seen almost edge-on. This COAST image shows a dust lane crossing the bright nucleus set in the flattened central bulge. Distance c.99million ly. Diameter c.190,000 ly.

At upper left is NGC 5740, a mag. 11.9 spiral which shows faint indications of spiral arms. Distance c.86million ly. Diameter, c.41,000 ly.

Both galaxies were discovered by William Herschel on the same night in February 1786.
