NGC6340 Galaxy Group in Draco

About this image

This galaxy group consists of NGC 6340, a mag.11.9 lenticular/spiral galaxy, and two interacting companions, IC 1251 (below left) and 1254 (below right). All three galaxies are found at a distance of c.62million ly.

NGC6340 is an interesting galaxy with a complex structure consisting of two semi-independent elements: a lenticular inner disk and an outer disk showing spiral arms. This is presumably a result of a galactic merger. NGC6340 is about twice the size of its companions. It was discovered by William Herschel in June 1788.

IC1251 and 1254 are mag.14 spiral galaxies. Both were discovered by Edward Swift in September 1890 while he was still a teenager.

This 3-minute exposure using the COAST in Tenerife shows the group well.
