NGC5945 Barred Spiral Galaxy in Boötes

About this image

NGC5945 is an interesting mag. 12.8 barred spiral galaxy with overlapping arms, so giving the appearance of a steering wheel. The stream of materiaL at lower left of the wheel is part of a pair of 'ears' surrounding the galaxy which are barely visible in this COAST image.

NGC5943 (centre above) is a mag. 13.2 lenticular galaxy. A jet of material can be seen emanating from its right side.

NGC 5947 (above right) is a mag. 13.7 barred spiral galaxy.

These galaxies lie at a distance of c.270-90million ly. They were discovered by Edouard Stephan (of Stephan's Quintet fame) between 1880 and 1884.

Numerous other small, faint galaxies can also be found in the image.
