About this image

NGC 5812 is a mag. 11.2 elliptical galaxy. Also seen (to the right) is the much fainter IC 1084, a mag. 14.2 elliptical galaxy.  NGC 5812 is interacting with a dwarf galaxy not seen here. The galaxies in the image lie at a distance of about 91 and 99million ly respectively.

NGC 5812 was discovered by William Herschel in March 1785, and IC 1084 over a century later (March 1887) by the American astronomer, Francis Preserved Leavenworth.
