About this image

This pair of interacting spiral galaxies was discovered by Édouard Stephan (of Stephan's Quintet fame) in June 1880 using the 31" reflector at Marseille Observatory. In this short exposure (the maximum allowed for visitors) COAST image, both the brighter nuclei and fainter disks can be seen. A number of other unidentified (by me) galaxies can also be seen.

NGC 5934 mag. 13.9 spiral galaxy, tilted slightly to the line of sight.

NGC 5935 mag. 14.8 edge-on spiral galaxy, appearing smaller than its neighbour.

Distance c.250million ly.
