About this image

M3 is about 90light years across some 34,000 ltyrs from us.

Formed of ancient starts dating back 11-12billion years these clusters give a local window to the early universe.

There are an unusually high number of variable stars in this cluster which enables accurate distance measurement as well as kinematic analysis of the cluster.
