Title

Largest Sunspot Group of Cycle 25

About this image

AR 13664, currently just past the central meridian, has developed over the past couple of days into the largest sunspot group this cycle so far.  It is also the largest group since AR 12192 from October 2014 and is comparable in size to the Carrington group from 1859. As the plots shows, its area, as I have measured from SDO HMI images, is still continuing to increase in size.

Update 9th May 12 UT: AR 13664 now has an area of 3400 MSH making it the 12th largest sunspot group in the last 150 years (since the start of the Greenwich Sunspot Catalogue in 1874).

Update 10th May 12 UT: the area of AR 13664 seems to have peaked at around 3400 MSH over the last day or so.

Update 12th May 00 UT: AR 13664 now slightly reducing in size as it progresses towards the western limb.
