M61 Barred Spiral Galaxy in Virgo

About this image

This barred spiral galaxy was discovered by the Italian astronomer Barnaba Oriani on May 5, 1779. Messier observed it on the same night but mistook it for a comet.

Diameter c.100,000 ly. Distance c.52million ly. Apparent mag. 10.18.

This Coast image shows it in company with NGC4301 (left), a mag. 13.0 barred spiral galaxy, and NGC4292, a mag.12.0 lenticular galaxy. The former was discovered by Bindon Stoney in April 1851, the latter by John Herschel in April 1828.
