About this image

NGC 3604 (also listed as NGC 3611) is a 12.2 mag. spiral galaxy in Leo. It was discovered in January 1786 by William Herschel.

This COAST image shows a large bright core surounded by a diffuse disk showing no real sign of structure. SDSS images do not reveal much in the way of arms either, but do show a large ring extending towards the bright star (mag. 10.6) Tycho-2  226-308-1.

Distance c.70-75million ly. Diameter c.45-50,000 ly.

PGC34476, faintly seen adjacent to the bright star, is a mag. c.16.5 irregular galaxy. It is thought to be unrelated to NGC 3604.

Distance c.80-85million ly. Size c.20-25,000ly.
