About this image

M59 is an elliptical galaxy and a member of the Virgo cluster. It was discovered by Johann Koehler in April 1779, a few days before Messier observed it.

Apparent mag. 10.6. Distance c.51million ly. Diameter c.90,000ly.

Also visible in this COAST image are:

NGC 4607 (top right) a mag. 12.8 edge-on spiral galaxy, distance c.56million ly. Discoverd by R.J.Mitchell in April 1854.

NGC 4606 (top right) a mag. 11.0 lenticular galaxy, distance c.55million ly. Discovered by William Herschel on March 15 1784.

NGC 4638 (bottom left) a mag. 11.2 edge-on lenticular galaxy, distance c.50million ly. Discovered by William Herschel on the same night as 4606.
