Title

Arp244 (NGC 4038, NGC 4039) Merging Galaxies in Corvus

About this image

Although with only a 3-minute exposure the detail in this COAST image is limited, it still shows the loops and holes in these merging galaxies and bright spots of active star formation. The faint 'antennae' (which give the pair its nickname) that arc away from each galaxy over huge distances cannot be seen here. Visually, a most peculiar object. Discoverd by William Herschel in February 1785.

Distance c.90-95million ly. Size (excluding antennae) c.65-70,000 ly.
