About this image

This galaxy group consists of five objects:

A: NGC 5353 - mag. 11.4 lenticular galaxy, distance c.125million ly, diameter c.70,000ly.

B: NGC 5354- mag. 11.0 lenticular galaxy, distance c.120million ly, diameter c.50,000ly.

C: NGC 5350 - mag. 11.3 face-on spiral galaxy, distance c.110million ly, diameter c.100,000ly.

D: NGC 5355 - mag. 13.1 lenticular galaxy, distance c.110million ly, diameter c.30-35,000ly.

These galaxies were all discovered by William Herschel on the night of January 14 1788. For some reason he did not identify NGC 5358 and it remained unrecorded for almost a century.

E: NGC 5358 - mag. 13.6 lenticular galaxy, distance c.110million ly, diameter c.40,000ly. Discovered by Edouard Stephan in June 1880.

The bright star is a mag. 6.5 type K5 orange-red star c.1,160 ly distant - a nice contrast with its more distant and larger visual companions!
