About this image

This superb galaxy was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in February 1752 and observed by Messier in 1781. Difficult to observe from the UK, this COAST image from Tenerife shows this Southern Pinwheel Galaxy to good effect.

Apparent mag.7.54. Distance c.15.2million ly. Diameter c.55,000ly.
