About this image

This image was taken by Dick Locke, Houston resident and long time astronomer and wildlife photographer. Dick writes that the moon was 1.88% illuminated and about 26 hours and 40 minutes old.  At the time skies in the Davis Mountains were favorable for viewing all the way to the horizon.  The image was underexposed by two stops to prevent blowing out the sky, but that led to a noisy image.  Additional processing in Photoshop via a traditional "S" curve made the noise even worse.  He therefore used "Neat Image" noise reduction in Photoshop which did a great job, and in the final image noise is well-controlled.
