About this image

This galaxy was identified as an "Object of Interest" for April 2024 by the Deep Sky Section. So I had a go at imaging it. I only got 1 hours of data in April, and another 40 minutes in early May.

It was discovered in 1748 by William Herschel, who noticed the bright star by the galaxy, which he described as a "Milky Ray". Of course the "milky ray" is this complete galaxy, which is slightly larger than our own and about 40 million light years away. The spiral galaxy to its north was catalogued, in the new General Catalogue, as linked to it: NGC 4517A.
