About this image

NGC 2881 is a rather an odd-ball galaxy, or rather, pair of interacting galaxies. It is fairly small (1.2 arcmin major axis; image scale here is 0.6 arcsec/pixel) and 13th magnitude. One component, to the south east of the pair, is a loose spiral with one arm much brighter and shorter than the other which appears to be wrapped around an irregular galaxy. The spectrum shows emission lines, which is also rather unusual. The red shift is 0.017012, corresponding to a distance of around 75 Mpc.
