M18 Open Cluster in Saggitarius

About this image

This small, faint, relatively young open cluster was discovered by Charles Messier in June 1764. It is challenging to locate because of its sparseness (Class II3p) and its setting against the rich star fields in Sagittarius, as this COAST image shows. It is difficult to imagine how Messier managed to identify it at all!

Apparent mag 7.5. Diameter c.18ly. Distance c.3,900ly. Age c.30million yrs.
