About this image

This frequently-imaged collection of nebulae + open cluster was discovered by Charles Messier on 1764 June 5. John Herschel, who observed it in 1826, described it as "A most remarkable object." Indeed! - as this COAST image shows.

Apparent mag 6.3. Distance c.5,200ly. Diameter c.40ly. Age c.300,000 yrs.
