Title

Squid nebula revisited

About this image

Last year I had a go at capturing the so-called Squid Nebula - a very

faint and elusive target. Indeed it is so elusive that it had escaped

attention from all deep sky surveys and required long exposure by an

amateur, Nicolas Outters, to see it for the first time in 2011.  The

squid nebula is set against the somewhat brighter Ha-emission region -

the 'Flying Bat nebula' (Sh2-129).

My first attempt (2023) used a 71mm refractor. This year, I have set

up a new rig with my old C8 SCT and a Hyperstar lens to convert it to

a very short (390mm) focal length working at f1.9. This gathers around

7.5 times the light of the refractor. I think the results are much

better... The image is bi-colour in Ha (2hrs 10min) and OIII (3hrs

25min), taken over three nights between June 30th and July 5th. The

subs are 300s each and unguided.
