Earthshine is a special case of a physical effect called "Planetshine", which is the faint light reflected from the planets falling on the night sides of the moons that orbit around them, allowing the night side of the moon to be observed without direct sunlight falling on it.


The ability of a body to reflect light is generally measured by a scale called luminosity, which is a number without units that expresses the amount of electromagnetic rays reflected from the body relative to the amount falling on it. In more precise detail, the term geometric luminosity is used to measure the luminosity of an astronomical body in the visible spectrum (and some other engineering details), for our planet. The Earth's geometric brightness is estimated at 0.434, according to Dr. David R. Williams of NASA, and it is a variable value. Scientists were able to calculate the effect of global warming on it through its change over the past years. The effect of Earth's glow has many names, including the ghostly moon or the gray moon glow, but the most famous name for this phenomenon. It is the da Vinci effect, named after Leonardo da Vinci, who explained this phenomenon in one of his manuscripts.

وهج الأرض هو حالة خاصة من تأثير فيزيائي يسمى "وهج الكواكب " وهو الضوء الخافت المنعكس من الكواكب الساقط على الجانبي الليلي للاقمار التي تدور حولها، مما يسمح برصد الجانب الليل من القمر دون سقوط اشعة الشمس مباشرة عليه.
تقاس قدرة الجسم بشكل عام على عكس الضوء بمقياس يسمى الوضائية وهو رقم بلا وحدات يعبر عن كمية الاشعة الكهرومغناطيسية المنعكسة من الجسم نسبة إلى الكمية الساقطة عليه، وبتفصيل ادق يستخدم مصطلح الوضاء الهندسي  لقياس وضائية الجرم الفلكي في الطيف المرئي (وبعض التفاصيل الهندسية الاخرى)، لكوكبنا الأرض وضائية هندسية تقدر ب 0.434 حسب دكتور ديفد.ر.وليمز من ناسا، وهي قيمة متغيرة استطاع العلماء حساب تأثير الاحتباس الحراري عليها من خلال تغيرها خلال الاعوام الفائتة، لتأثير وهج الأرض اسماء كثيرة منها القمر الشبحي او وهج القمر الرمادي ولكن اشهر اسم لهذه الظاهرة هو تأثير دافنشي نسبة إلى ليوناردو دا فينشي الذي فسر هذه الظاهرة في احد مخطوطاته.
