Red Giant S-Star

About this image

π1 Grus is a giant very red star which is one of the brightest members of a class of stars known as S stars, in the southern constellation Grus (Arabic= الكركي). It is an ageing star, thought to be well on its way transitioning from a red giant to a planetary nebula.

At Dec-46 this star isn't observable from the UK or Europe. You can also see the galaxy IC 5201 (mag. 11.53) to the bottom right.

Hmmm, perhaps I should try colour imaging, something I do extremely rarely, when I return to La Palma next month. The telescope there can reach a declination of -47.5 so it is just in reach.

Alternatively, I may just go for a long exposure of IC 5201 as it is relatively bright and a rather pretty open spiral.

Thanks for drawing these to my attention.
