Arp38/NGC6412 Spiral Galaxy in Draco

About this image

Arp38/NGC6412 is a face-on, barred(?) spiral galaxy. It was discovered in December 1797 by William Herschel.

As this COAST image shows, the arms of the galaxy show various bright patches. Arp seems to have interpreted these as distinct objects, hence the classification, but this seems not to be so. An interesting galaxy though small and faint.

Apparent mag. 11.6. Distance c.60million ly. Diameter c.45,000ly.
