Barnard's star 2019-2023

About this image

This the latest in a series of star trail images. It shows the proper motion of Barnard's star over the course of five years. It is heading northwards (i.e. upwards in the image) at over 10 arcseconds per annum.

The variation in the apparent size of the star each year arises from differing seeing conditions. This year's was poorer than usual.  The star, aka V2500 Oph, does vary in brightness, but not significantly on this timescale.
