About this image

Astronomy has changed down the years. Here is an observation of a comet that appears to be about mag 16.7. That such an observation is routine is remarkable...

Until recently this was thought to be an asteroid. Apparently, it has a tiny coma and tail but that wasn't evident to me, but as it it was low, the Moon was nearby and I was looking through half a hedge, I'm not surprised...

Great effort to image this interesting object.

The tail is very faint and it is in approximately the same direction as the comet's motion (approx 250 deg) so it is easy mistake a faint star trail that happens to be in the right place as the tail. I imaged this object on two nights (Aug 9/10 and Aug 10/11). Conditions on the morning of Aug 10 were excellent with very good transparency and good seeing. There is a hint of the tail on Aug 10 image (and no star anywhere near) and the comet's PSF (at 3.8 arcsec) is definitely fuzzier than a similar brightness star (2.9 arcsec).
