About this image

The faint scatter of stars at the centre of the image is all that can be seen of the globular cluster, Palomar 1, by all accounts a very difficult object for observers. Unusually young for a globular cluster, it was discovered in 1954 by George Abell during examination of the plates from the first Palomar Observatory Sky Survey.

Apparent mag. 13.18. Size c.15ly.  Distance (from Galactic Centre) c.55,400ly.  Age c.8billion yr.
