About this image

This irregular dwarf elliptical galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in November 1787. It is an active source of star formation and displays dust clouds. A large example can be seen at 2 o'clock in this COAST image. The galaxy is a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy and is on course to merge with the Milky Way, approaching us at c.472,000 mph.

Apparent mag. 10.1. Diameter c.2,300ly. Distance c.2.07million ly.
