About this image

I don't have the equipment to be able to see surface features on Venus so I thought I would just try to make a drawing of how the phase appeared to me. It seems that according to the phase in the BAA handbook Venus should have looked more gibbous than the way I have drawn it. The BAA handbook value on this date was about 0.631. I have measured the distance along the equator to the terminator as 18mm on my diagram and the diameter is 32mm and so this gives a phase of 18/32 = 0.563. This is also the ratio of the illuminated area to the total area (I will write about why in my blog at some point). The difference between this and the BAA handbook value is 0.068 and is probably explained by the Schroter effect.
