About this image

Another rare, clear evening gave me the opportunity to monitor this event - the mag. 15.8 Mars-crossing asteroid (1640) Nemo, 7 km in diameter, was predicted to occult a mag. 11.3 star in Auriga for up to 0.7 seconds. I was less than 1 km from the predicted centreline and recorded a dip of 0.35 seconds.

The resultant timings:

  Event time in UTC

   D: 22 27  4.98 ± 0.03

   R: 22 27  5.33 ± 0.03

Instead of displaying its light curve, the animated GIF shows the brief event (left of centre). The cold wind was gusting to 40 km/hr, so I closed the roll-off-roof as much as I could to shelter the telescope.

The MPC citation for (1640) Nemo reads:

"Named for the fictional builder of advanced technology in the novel by Jules Verne, 'Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea'. Name proposed by J. Meeus."
