C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) in the morning twilight

About this image

The elongation of this comet is now dropping below 18 degrees in the morning sky so it is only visible in bright twilight. This widefield view was taken using a 135mm FL lens at Rio Hurtado. The ridge in the distance extends to around 4 deg elevation and the Sun was only 14 deg down when this image was taken. The skies from this observatory are incredibly clear though, so the transparency is excellent low down. The comet is currently in Scorpius and I got a total magnitude of 5.4 this morning. It is on target to briefly reach -7 at perihelion on January 13 at an elongation of less than 5 degrees.
