About this image

This is an animation of images taken with the SOHO LASCO C3 coronagraph clear filter. I've used the raw fits files and subtracted a reference image generated using a min stack of the equivalent images on January 1st. This gets rid of the large brightness variation of the solar corona. Each image was then processed with a log stretch to maintain the available dynamic range. The frames used were taken between 09:30 and 17:30 UTC on 2025-01-14. The C3 FoV is 15 x 15 deg.

The comet looks very healthy with a very impressive tail. It is now in the bright evening twilight but will emerge into darker skies for observers in the southern hemisphere.
