About this image

Before attending the BAA meeting on Jan 18 I visited the Science Museum to see the Versailles: Science and Splendour Exhibition

Major exhibition revealing untold stories of science at Versailles opens at the Science Museum | Science Museum

which presents the roles of Louis' XIV, XV and XVI in encouraging and progressing the work of French scholars and scientists, and the formation of the French Academy of Sciences.

Amongst the items on display there's a planetarium (orrery-like clock), an eclipsarium and J-D Cassinii's lunar map, engraved by Jean Patigny, (lent by Paris Observatory Library), which depicts the major features rather well. It includes the well-known profile of a woman's head (sometimes believed to be of Cassini's wife) on the Promontorium Heraclides, Sinus Iridum and the outline of a heart across Mare Serenitatis. Some of the ray systems look like an octopus with tentacles and craters representing the suckers.

(The image isn't circular because the map was in a display case with low-level lighting, so the photo was taken at an oblique angle then I applied a small degree of distortion correction).

The Exhibition is also an opportunity to see the famous 'Marie Antoinette' perpetuelle watch.

Amazing detail. The extensive ejecta ray from Tycho to the northern pole is very striking. Thanks for sharing this.
